Australia dismissed for just 104 as India take control in the first Test

India are building a lead after a mayhem-filled 17-wicket first day of the opening Perth Test

Australia were bowled out for just 104 on Saturday, as fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah claimed his 11th five-wicket haul to give India a 46-run lead at lunch on Day 2 of the first Test in Perth.

Bumrah (5-30), captaining in place of the injured Rohit Sharma, set the tone with his first delivery of the morning. The ball, pitched back-of-a-length, seamed away from left-hander Alex Carey (21) and was taken by keeper Rishabh Pant.

After a chaotic opening day that saw 17 wickets fall, India were dismissed for 150 in just two sessions. But Bumrah led a stunning turnaround, sending Australia crashing to 67-7 by stumps.

Debutant Harshit Rana (3-48) claimed the second wicket of Day 2, bowling a short, fast delivery to tailender Nathan Lyon (5), who could only fend the ball to KL Rahul at gully.

Overnight batsman Mitchell Starc, who went on to make 26, denied Bumrah a career-best haul when he edged a delivery between keeper Rishabh Pant and first slip. Starc then threw caution to the wind, cracking Harshit Rana to the midwicket fence for four.

Starc took several blows to the helmet and shoulder during his gritty 112-ball stay, displaying the kind of resilience and intent that had been lacking from the other recognized batsmen. The 34-year-old added 25 runs with the more cautious Josh Hazlewood (7*), expertly rotating the strike when needed. But Rana eventually ended the resistance, rushing Starc into a mistimed shot that was caught by Pant.
